Last year Amazon unveiled the futuristic Amazon Echo and it caught just about everyone’s attention, however now a few months later, the company is unveiling not one, but two new additions to the Alexa family. The “Amazon Tap” and “Echo Dot” both bring the same always-listening functionality as the original Amazon Echo, but with a different form factor and price point.
The $129 Amazon Tap is designed to be portable. While the original Echo was designed to be used around the house, the Tap is designed to be used anywhere. It includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, dual-stereo speakers, 360° omni-directional audio, and of course the same always-listening audio found on the Echo. The battery is rated for 9 hours of continuous usage and up to 3 weeks on standby.
To use Alexa, you’ll simply hit the “Echo Go” button on the device which then connects to the Alexa app on your smartphone for an internet connection.
Amazon Tap comes in with a price of $129 and will be available to purchase from March 31st. If you want to get in early however, you can submit your pre-order on Amazon right now.
Amazon Echo Dot
If the original Amazon Echo was just too much for you, the new Echo Dot just might be. This miniature Echo is capable of using the same long-range microphone technology that enables it to hear your voice commands from 20-25 feet away, but this one is a bit different when it comes to speakers.
The Echo Dot does include an on-board speaker, but it’s not as loud or powerful as the one found in the standard Echo or Amazon Tap. However to allow users to add some louder audio, this device has a line-out port to plug into any set of speakers and it can even connect to another speaker over Bluetooth. You can still of course use services such as Spotify, Pandora, and of course Prime Music with the device as well.
This device starts at just $89, however with one big caveat, it’s only available to purchase using Amazon’s Alexa ordering system. What does that mean? You’ll only be able to get it by ordering through an existing Amazon Echo or an Amazon Fire TV. That said, pre-orders start today with shipping at the end of the month. Hopefully the company opens this up to standard ordering today.
