What The Heck Happened To The Moto 360 Sport?

If you’ve been following the wearable space over the past few months, you’ve undoubtedly heard about the Moto 360 Sport, Android Wear’s first fitness-centric option. On paper, there’s nothing wrong with it and just about everyone I know who owns one loves it. Sure at $300 it’s not cheap, but it’s certainly not bad. However, what the heck is happening with this thing right now? To preface things a little bit, we don’t actually know exactly what is happening.

In the past few weeks we’ve seen multiple sales on the device, cutting up to $100 off of the price. We’ve also seen the device leave retailers, including the Google Store.

So what’s happening? It could be any number of things. The first and most obvious is just that the watch might not be selling all that well. Why? Again, there are a couple of reasons. First off, the Moto 360 Sport isn’t quite as capable as your average fitness tracker. It really only tracks your heart rate and steps. That’s great for runners, but if you exercise with activities like yoga or weight lifting, than the 360 Sport is not at all a good choice for you. Motorola said that better tracking functionality was in the works, but it’s been quite a while since the watch was launched and we still haven’t seen anything added. Another reason it may not be selling well is the price. At $300, it’s not attractive pricing as a fitness wearable, but even less so as a smartwatch. The Moto 360 Sport is stuck with a silicone band and arguably doesn’t look as good as the standard Moto 360, which, by the way, costs the same amount of money.

Another reason for the discounts could be that Motorola (or Lenovo) could have decided the fitness wearable was not a sector they wanted to continue working in, and thus have decided to take the product off the market after they’ve cleared out some excess stock. That’s unlikely, but it is very possible.

Regardless of all of this, there’s one thing you should know. The Moto 360 Sport is cheap right now, like, dirt cheap. Amazon currently has all three variants under $240, some as low at $199. If you’re looking for a smartwatch, this is one to consider, even if it might not be on sale much longer.
