CyanogenMod is a ROM on top of Android that is similar to stock Android, with some awesome enhancements. It’s a pretty basic ROM, but allows you to run the absolute newest version of Android available on your aging devices. It’s also a very stable ROM compared to many others on the market. It basically gives new life to a device that may have been abandoned by the manufacturer, and it’s all thanks to the community.

It basically gives new life to a device that may have been abandoned by the manufacturer, and it’s all thanks to the community. CyanogenMod was started by just a single person and grew fast. Now they are their own company. The formation of the new company actually took place earlier this year in April, after several months of pitching the idea to potential investors. Part of the impetus for this move was to remove the barriers and challenges present in trying to scale the kind of growth the CyanogenMod community was experiencing.
Steve Kondik, the CTO for the new company, says the goals are “straighforward”:
- Organize, lead, and support our community
- Create amazing user experience centered around how YOU work
- Security solutions that really work
- Stay committed to building the features our users need
- No junk
- Constant updates
- Available on everything, to everyone
Cyanogen indicates that they still recognize their biggest asset is the community and they intend to continue to support the community.
But this isn’t all that’s new from Cyanogen. One of the reasons that everyone doesn’t have CyanogenMod is mainly because it’s such a pain to install. The process sometimes scares them just because it’s something they are not used to and there are many things that can go wrong. Cyanogen raised $7 million to build a new and better version of Android that is even easier to install. The reason is they want market share. They already 8 million registered users of CyanogenMod already. Keep in mind that this is free ROM available for most devices that has more users than Windows Phone, a platform backed by Microsoft. The main reason that CyanogenMod is going to take off even faster from this point on is because of the new installer. Installing CyanogenMod right now is a nightmare. There are 5 steps that are actually pretty complicated and has many places that you can mess up. The new installed gets rid of this hassle. It has what looks to be a clean and simple interface that will make installing the ROM a breeze. When this installer is released the number of users will explode. The last and most exciting thing is that they have an unannounced hardware manufacturer. That is huge. They will have massive potential to become the number 3 platform by next year. You can read their blog post in the link below to find out more. Marques Brownlee also did an amazing explanation video on his YouTube channel that I highly recommend watching. He did a great job explaining the new changes.
I am looking forward to see what Cyanogen has coming and I’m sure a lot of you are too. Do you use CyanogenMod already, or are you going to wait for the new installer? Let me know in the comments!
