Reviewers have been getting their hands on AMD’s top of the line R9 290X GPU this week – so how does it compare to Nvidia’s GTX 780 and GTX Titan?
The R9 290X has dual BIOS’, allowing the user to switch between Quiet mode, which lowers the fan speed to 40%, or Uber mode, which bumps the fan speed up to 55%. This in turn allows AMD OverDrive (similar to GPU Boost 2.0 but for AMD cards) to automatically overclock – giving better performance.
Benchmarks show the R9 290X consistently beats the GTX 780 in all games, at both 1920 x 1080 and 2560 x 1440 resolutions. This is probably down to the extra 1GB of GDDR5 VRAM the R9 290X offers.
However comparing it to the GTX Titan, which was released back in February, benchmarks aren’t so clear. In AMD optimised games such as GRID 2, the R9 290X triumphs over the GTX Titan. But in other games, the Titan is mostly still on top.
Expect this to change once the GTX 780Ti is launched, but as of now:
GTX 780 < R9 290X < GTX Titan
