Remember that Phonebloks concept a while back? We all kind of looked at it and said, “that’s not a bad idea”, then forgot about it. Well it looks like Motorola has been developing a similar project for the past year. In fact, they actually teamed up with Phonebloks to popularize the idea.
Motorola wants to create a endoskeleton like the motherboard of a PC, with various modules that owners will be able to to switch. If you want a better camera, just pick up a new camera module. If you need a better battery, get rid of the camera and grab a much bigger battery.
Motorola set the goals of Project Ara with this statement:
We want to do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software: create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem, lower the barriers to entry, increase the pace of innovation, and substantially compress development timelines.
The project will be developed in the open as Motorola states, and Phonebloks will serve as the community. While Motorola hasn’t said how far into the project they are, they have stated that they have done “deep technical work” suggesting that the foundations for the device have been laid. Motorola says that they hope to open a MDK (Module Developers Kit) by this winter.
Motorola will definitely have to overcome many challenges to bring this product to the consumer space, but with Google’s help, they might just be able to pull it off. Are you looking forward to it? Let me know in the comments!
