Have you ever wanted to send an email to someone you know on Google+? Google is betting that you have, so today they announced that soon Gmail will let you email Google + contacts even if you don’t know their address. If you have a Gmail and Google+ account the feature will roll out soon that any Google+ user can email you, although they won’t know your address unless you reply.

The feature can be restricted and switched off, but for the many people who don’t follow the Gmail blog or G+ page this seems like the kind of thing that could bring unwelcome surprises outside of G+, I mostly see complaints rather than praise about the degree to which Google is integrating its social network with everything else. I don’t mind in most cases the YouTube comment takeover was clumsily handled but ultimately a big improvement, but this integration feels wrong-headed.
