Windows Phone 8.1 Leaks Via Emulator, Shows Off New Features

Windows Phone 8 is still one of the smaller mobile operating systems availble but in recent months it has been rapidly improving and growing thanks in part to brilliant hardware from Nokia and tons of investment from it’s creator, Microsoft. The OS is very unique yet still very interesting. One of the primary reasons for the lack of growth in Windows Phone 8.1 is the lack of developer support. Nonetheless Microsoft continues to improve Windows Phone and with the 8.1 update, it seems like they are moving in the right direction.

It is important to note that the leaked build only shows some of the improvements to the OS and may not be all we see in the update. The leak comes courtesy of YouTube user sM4llziE from WinBeta..

In this build it is notable that the Search button which usually opens Bing Search, does not work in this build. That is probably because Cortana, a voice assistant similar to S Voice, Google Now, or Siri.

Some of the new features include:

  • Improved multitasking with the ability to swipe to close apps
  • Projector Settings
  • VPN and USB settings
  • A new camera UI
  • Pictures hub
  • A new on-screen navigation bar which is customization. You can change the color, have it match the background app
  • A new volume mixer

There are also many other changes in Windows Phone that are shown in the video below. Many of the changes in Windows Phone 8.1 aren’t shown in this build so the version Microsoft will officially launch can be expected to be slightly different.
