Android tablets have been around for a long time, but always outsold by the iPad. Apple’s tablet has always been the pinnacle of the tablet market, until now. Android tablets have been gaining in popularity over the past couple years since the rise of low cost 7 inch Android tablets. This started off with the original Amazon Kindle Fire. At around $200, the Kindle Fire and many other Android tablets like the Nexus 7 found their way into millions of homes. In 2013 however, Android tablets finally outsold the iPad.

According to research from Gartner, more than 121 million Android tablets were sold in 2013 beating out Apple’s estimated 70 million. This gave Android tablets the majority of the tablet market at about 62%. It’s notable though that Android tablet manufacturers don’t have quite as high a profit margin since most Android tablets such as the Nexus 7 are budget friendly. This contributes to their success since the average consumer is much more likely to purchase a lower cost device.

Does it surprise you that Android tablets have sold more than the iPad, or the fact that it took this long?
