Keiji Inafune is a pretty busy guy these days. With several projects in the works for his company Comcept, including the spiritual successor to the Megaman franchise Mighty No. 9, he still manages to make the time for working on another.
At the BitSummit indie game festival in Kyoto, Japan, Keiji Inafune and Inti Creates announced Azure Striker Gunvolt, a 2D side-scrolling action game coming the Nintendo eShop. Inti Creates’ previous projects included the Megaman Zero and ZX series, and some of that influence can be seen in this project.
The announcement trailer for Azure Striker Gunvolt shows off a few story and gameplay details. In the near future, an organization called the Sumeragi Group has brought peace to world by subjugating people possessing unique powers. A boy named Gunvolt joins a rebel force to strike back and free the world from Sumeragi control. Besides showing off the 2D action design and Gunvolt’s lightning powers, the trailer also shows off a couple bosses. Melac uses wormhole for unpredictable attacks and Daytona strikes with powerful fire-based attacks reminiscent of Ikaruga-style games.
Azure Striker Gunvolt is set for a Summer 2014 release in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS. Inti Creates CEO Takuya Aizu confirmed with Siliconera that it will also release at the same time in North America.
