It was teased last week through Atari’s social media sites that we would be seeing an announcement of a new RollerCoaster Tycoon, using the hashtag #RTC4M. It was suspected that the ‘M’ in this tag stood for ‘mobile’, and has now been confirmed. RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile will be coming soon to iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

On the official RollerCoaster Tycoon website, Atari has provided a link to the announcement trailer on YouTube (uploaded by a channel that isn’t Atari’s official one oddly enough). Developed by On5, RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile will be bring the theme park design gameplay the series is known for and combining it with social features such as leaderboards and Facebook integration.

Atari has also stated on Twitter that there is a “PC experience in production now for release this year”. Hopefully we will get a full-fledged RollerCoaster Tycoon game, but the using the word ‘experience’ instead of words like ‘game’ or ‘version’ is a little discomforting.

It has not been confirmed whether or not RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile will be using a free-to-play or premium app model, but if the trailer is any indication, it appears that tickets may be the game’s real-money currency. The top bar of the game shows two separate currencies and the interface shows an alternate method of getting tickets through invites.

It is rumored that RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile will be a $2.99 game with the microtransactions being cosmetic, and I hope that’s the case. We’ll have to wait and see what Atari has in store for this game, but here’s to hoping it doesn’t go the route of other PC-games-turned-mobile like Dungeon Keeper. That bad reputation is the last thing this project needs.
