Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi turned to the internet today to unveil a new smartphone accessory that allows control over Xiaomi smartphones through a special device that plugs into the phone’s headphone jack. Sound familar? That’s because the product is identical to a popular Kickstarter project that was recently funded called Pressy.
Both products can preform the same actions and look nearly identical with one crucial difference. Pressy costs about $27 while Xiaomi’s product costs under a dollar. Unfortunately for Pressy, Xiaomi is not infringing on any patents since Pressy does not have any patents on the technology. Pressy does say that they have “IP Rights” for the design and functionality but that doesn’t make what Xiaomi is doing illegal. Pressy’s full response to these developments is below.
Xiaomi plans to call this product MiKey and too bring it to the U.S. under another name. What are your thoughts on this? Is what Xiaomi’s doing right or should Pressy take legal action against them? Let us know in the comments.
“Though the knock-off versions were anticipated, we did not expect to see it from such a respectable and known company … We have IP rights for the design and functionality of Pressy, and are considering our next moves to handle the situation.”
