One of the most anticipated titles coming up for the Wii U (besides Smash Bros.) has to be Mario Kart 8. As tends to be the case with Nintendo’s main franchise titles, news about them trickles out leading up to release day. Some trickles can be small, but the latest one offers quite a bit.
Over on the official Youtube channel, Nintendo has released a new trailer for Mario Kart 8, detailing some new features being added to the game. First off, there are three new characters added to the huge current roster, Metal Mario, Lakitu, and Shy Guy.
The trailer also shows off some new tracks, including Mario Kart 8’s version of Rainbow Road. When looking at it carefully, this track appears to be a “remake” of the one in Mario Kart 64, one which incorporates the anti-gravity elements in the new game. Previously, Nintendo has mentioned that there will be two versions of Rainbow Road in Mario Kart 8
The last news shown in the trailer relates to the inclusion of new items, like the Boomerang (which acts as you would expect) and the Piranha Plant (which sits in front of your car and functions similar to the way they do in Super Mario 3D World). This leads into the expanded item customization eluded to by director Kosuke Yabuki at GDC last month. Without being specific, he mentioned that the player will be able to remove some or possibly disable items from the race. The extent that it will be remains to be seen.
It appears that Mario Kart 8 is shaping up to be the culmination of years of experience making Mario Kart games, bringing in the features and tracks that the fans love. Mario Kart 8 will be releasing for the Wii U on May 30th, so we’ve still got what feels like a long wait ahead of us.
