Earlier this morning Feedly made an announcement on their blog that they had been hit pretty hard with a DDoS attack which crippled the news reading service. The attacker or attackers were trying to get some money out of the people over at Feedly in return for stopping the attack. Feedly did as they should and refused to negotiate with the attackers, they then got involved with other people who had suffered similar attacks as well as law enforcement in order to fix the situation. At this point Feedly has posted an update on their blog saying that they have made some changes to their infrastructure that should bring the Feedly service back online, although it still may take a few hours.
For those of you who are not aware of what a Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDoS) attack is, it is an attempt to render an online service unavailable by overwhelming it’s servers with traffic from multiple sources. Most of the time the attackers will continue to slam a services servers until they receive a money-based ransom.
Feedly wants to stress that nobody’s information was stolen or compromised in today’s DDoS attacks and that the service should be up and running again in a few hours.
