Samsung has been rumored to launch a virtual reality headset similar to the Oculus Rift for a while now, and today SamMobile is claiming that the device will be released later this year alongside the Galaxy Note 4 at IFA.
The first image (seen above) seemingly confirms the “Gear VR” branding. This branding makes sense as the Gear name has been used for Samsung’s wearables lineup. However what has our interest much more is the image seen below of the hardware itself. It looks very nice and pretty comfortable as well. What’s most interesting though, is that this headset won’t be standalone, it will be powered by your smartphone.
The Gear VR will apparent connect to a Galaxy device (Likely Note 4, Galaxy S5, and Note 3) to display graphics. The headset itself will even apparently include a button that turns on the phones camera to allow the user to see his/her surroundings.
Samsung is reportedly working with Oculus to create apps for this device and will also open an SDK to developers so they can make their own apps. Would you be interested in this device? Let us know in the comments.
