Want to Race As Link In Mario Kart 8? Your Chance Is Coming This Fall

The success of Mario Kart 8 has been pretty phenomenal for Nintendo, especially considering the small user base on the Wii U. While the game is content complete on its own (besides the awkward Battle Mode decision), there really is no reason why one of the console’s biggest games can’t have some more stuff coming its way. The previously announced free Mercedes-Benz kart DLC released today is nice and all, but the two new DLC Packs coming our way are where it’s at.

Each DLC Pack will include 3 new racers, 4 new karts, and 2 new Cups with 4 tracks apiece. The first pack features Link, Cat Peach and Tanooki Mario as the new racers, while the Blue Falcon is one of the confirmed karts. No tracks have been confirmed, but the images appear to show a track inspired by F-Zero. According to the website, the release of this pack will be November 2014.

The second DLC Pack features Villager and Isabelle from Animal Crossing and Dry Bowser as the new racers, but no karts are confirmed as of yet. Same as the previous pack, the tracks aren’t confirmed but an Animal Crossing-themed finish line is teased. According to the site, this pack will be released in May 2015.

Interestingly, these Packs can be preordered as of today, which may be one of the first cases I’ve seen for a Nintendo game. Each Pack separately costs $7.99, but bundled together will cost only $11.99. As an added incentive, if you preorder both DLC packs, you get access to eight new colors for Yoshi and Shy Guy as soon as you preorder.

Normally, as far as preordering DLC goes, I would hate on this. I for one am getting tired of the Season Pass/Pre-Order DLC/Retailer-Exclusive DLC monotony that the AAA industry has gotten into. This, on the other hand, is DLC done right. What you get is obvious (3 racers, 4 karts, 8 tracks per pack) and the price is reasonable (with the bundle being an even better value than I imagined). If this is the route that Nintendo has to take in the future, then this is a good way of handling it in my opinion.
