Microsoft Rumored To Be Acquiring Minecraft Creator Mojang For $2 Billion

Brace yourselves. According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is nearing a deal with Mojang, the creators of Minecraft. The deal currently values Mojang at about $2 Billion and could be officially announced as soon as this week.

Bloomberg has also reported on the deal stating that it will likely be wrapped up next week. Apparently Microsoft approached Mojang a few month ago regarding a possible sale. Microsoft wants to make Mojang more profitable by increasing the user base and through licensing agreements for toys and movies.

Since it’s release in 2009, Minecraft has sold over 50 million copies and has an extremely loyal fanbase. Mojang reported over $100 million in profits just last year. The game has been available on multiple platforms including Windows, Linux, OSX, Android, iOS, PlayStation, and yes, Xbox. The Wall Street Journal stated that a possible reason for Microsoft buying the company is to “invigorate” their Xbox division. Basing this on the sources alone, I’d say this is pretty likely to come true soon. What are your thoughts on this? Would you support Microsoft buying Mojang, or are you against it? Let us know in the comments.
