There are currently three Android Wear devices on the market. Two of them however are the most notable. The Moto 360 and the LG G Watch. So which one is better? Which should you buy? Well, let’s find out. In this article I’ll be picking 5 reasons why the Moto 360 is better, and then 5 reasons why the LG G Watch is better. First let’s go over why the Moto 360 is better.
5 Reasons Why The Moto 360 Is Better Than The LG G Watch
– The Design
This is the obvious one, but also the biggest one. The Moto 360 is the first round Android Wear device. The first round smartwatch period in fact. This round design makes the watch look just like a normal wristwatch and that is important to a lot of people. In some cases this design also makes this watch feel better on your wrist. Plus, it’s just gorgeous.
– The Display
The display on the Moto 360 is round, obviously. But that’s not why I think it’s better. I think that it is better because of a few reasons. First, it’s brighter. This screen is much easier to read outdoors than the G Watch but also dim enough for use in a dark room.
– The Heart Rate Sensor
Health has been at the core of wearables for a while, and the Moto 360 is great for that use. While it looks like a premium, expensive watch, it also has a heart rate monitor and pedometer to track your health. While the LG G Watch has a pedometer as well, the Moto 360’s heart rate monitor plays nice with the device’s software which in turn helps you to be healthier.
– The Features
Let’s talk a bit about the software. No we’re not talking about Android Wear. Android Wear is Android Wear. That’s not going to change no matter which of these two watches you pick. Instead, let’s talk about the watch faces Motorola includes on this watch and also the health features. The watch faces are all good-looking out of the box, but thanks to the Motorola connect app, you can customize its colors to your liking. For health, the watch tracks your heart rate at intervals throughout the day and uses that data to see just how active you are.
– The Charger
Charging on smartwatches is almost universally annoying. Sony seems to be the only one getting it perfect using a microUSB port to charge. Step in Motorola. The Moto 360 includes Qi wireless charging right out of the box which works universally with any Qi wireless charger. The one included in the box is designed specifically for it, but the option to use any cover is a great step towards ending proprietary connectors on smartwatches.
5 Reasons Why The LG G Watch Is Better Than The Moto 360
– The Battery
Battery life on a watch is huge. So far, the Pebble is the only one to get things right. Their smartwatch lasts days and days on a single charge. Android Wear on the other day gives only a day. That’s no matter what watch you use. Depending on what your day is like though, battery can be different. The LG G Watch has a 400 mAh battery, the biggest of any Android Wear device so far. While it’ll still only give you a day, it does that better than the Moto 360. The Moto 360 keeps the screen on only when you use it. While that usually works, it’s nice to be able to just glance at your device. The LG G Watch allows that by keeping the screen on all the time. Think about it, the LG G Watch has it’s screen on all the time and it does much better than the 360 which has it’s screen off most of the time. Says something doesn’t it? Imagine the G Watch with the screen off most of the time. It would last a couple days at least.
– The Performance
The Moto 360 is powered by a Texas Instruments OMAP 3 processor. That processor was found in phones like the DROID X, which was released in 2010. Why did they pick that? We might never know for sure. The LG G Watch on the other hand packs a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor. This processor is found in budget phones like the Moto G all the time, and it’s pretty awesome to be honest. Things are noticeably smoother and faster on the G Watch over the 360.
– The Band
Why is the band on the G Watch better? How could it be? Silicone vs. leather? Well let me explain. While the Moto 360’s band is far superior in look and feel, the G Watch also has a couple advantages. First of all, it’s easier to replace. You can replace the band on the LG G Watch much easier than you can on the Moto 360. Second, it’s better around water. The stock silicone band will stand up to water much better than the leather on the 360. The same goes for sweat. The band comes down to form over function, which is more important to you.
– The Size
The LG G Watch has a 1.65″ inch square display. That’s not huge, but it’s not small either, and those bezels don’t help. So why is the size a good thing? Well, it is for me. This one is my opinion completely. I like watches that feel bigger on my wrist and have a little more heft to them. The Moto 360 doesn’t fit that at all. It’s very light. The G Watch on the other hand has much more heft to it.
– The Price
The LG G Watch launched at $229. That’s when I bought it and I don’t regret it at all. Since then, LG dropped the price to $179 and that’s a really good value. Unfortunately that $229 has since returned. The Moto 360 is $249. The G Watch is definitely a better value when it comes to price, at least in my opinion.
In the end, the choice is up to you. Both these watches give work well and are priced nicely as well. They offer many of the same features and each has it’s advantages. It all comes down to what you value more, form, or function. The Moto 360 excels in it’s appearance, but the LG G Watch gives a snappier experience and longer battery life. For me personally it’s going to be really tough deciding between these two as I do love them both quite a lot. Who knows, maybe I’ll just end up wearing them both at the same time!
