“The best phone Samsung has made”. Those are generally the thoughts found in reviews of the Galaxy Note 4. This past Friday I finally got my hands on Samsung’s latest phablet and over the weekend I was able to pull together my initial thoughts on the phone.
One of the biggest and most compelling points of the Note 4 is the new design. Plastic returns on the back of the phone, but not the edges are made of chamfered aluminum, a huge departure from Samsung’s previous designs. This really makes a huge difference in the way this phone feels. The metal gives the phone a far more premium feel than other Samsung devices. Waking up in the morning to a cold feel in the hand is something that you just don’t get to appreciate with phones not made of metal. To be completely honest, I can’t find a downside with this design. It looks great, it feels great, and it doesn’t give any issues right away.
Now, let’s talk about everything else. The screen to start off is a 5.7″ inch Quad-HD AMOLED panel. It is absolutely stunning. Everything looks absolutely amazing. Everything from watching media to just reading looks stunning. Battery life on the other hand isn’t quite as impressive. The device packs a 3,220 mAh cell, but it doesn’t last as long as I’d have hoped. On average over the week I would get about 3.5 hours of screen time over about 15 hours. That’s better than phones like the LG G3 and others, but I expected more from this phone. It could be of course that the phone simply hasn’t been broken in yet, but I guess we’ll have to wait a few days to see for sure.
Software on the Note 4 is, to be brief, meh. It’s better than it used to be, but it’s still not great. Lag and dropped frames and pretty consistent and at times it can simply be annoying to find what I want to find. Features are abundant and some are extremely useful. The S-Pen is also a very nice addition to the device that I use very frequently.
Overall the Note 4 is a pretty good device. So far I’m pretty impressed and I am enjoying my time with the device so far. Stay tuned over the next few weeks for our coverage on the Note 4 including the full review and more.
