It’s pretty crazy how well Nintendo’s amiibo lineup has been doing. So far in the United States, sales of amiibo figures have been tracking alongside the sales of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. That number’s approaching 1 million, and that’s just Wave 1. Waves 2 and 3 are due to arrive in the coming months. However, if there are certain Wave 3 amiibo you want from your favorite retailer, you may need a change of plans.
Shulk, Lucario, Meta Knight, and Rosalina & Luma are all confirmed to be retailer exclusives. Like Xenoblade Chronicles before it, the Shulk amiibo will be exclusive to Gamestop. Alongside it, Lucario will be exclusive to Toys ‘R’ Us and Meta Knight to Best Buy. Recently, Rosalina & Luma were confirmed to be exclusive to Target.
Personally, I don’t mind retailer exclusives when it comes to products like amiibo. Games are a different story when it comes to retailer exclusive in-game content, but I can better relate to the reasoning behind something like this. I know I’ll likely be making the groundwork to get these, but I can understand the frustration that some may have towards this practice.
Wave 2 amiibo is in the process of releasing this month, with some figures available now. Wave 3 will be coming in February 2015, and all amiibo will be priced at the regular price of $12.99. If you’re curious about their functionality with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, check out my review here.
