The Google Glass Explorer Program Is Coming To An End, But It’s Not All Bad News
Well folks, the bittersweet time has finally arrived, the Google Glass Explorer Program is finally coming to an end. The Google Glass team posted on Google+ this morning that Google Glass is “graduating”, hopefully meaning that a consumer launch is just around the corner. Either way, the Glass Explorer program, as of January 19th, is dead and will move out of the Google X labs, meaning that Google no longer considers Glass to be an experimental product.
January 19th not only marks the death of the explorer program, it also marks the end of the Google Glass Explorer Edition. January 19th will be the last day that consumers will be able to purchase a pair of the Explorer Edition Google Glass.
The Google Glass team inside of Google X will soon be moving out of Google X and will become its own team inside Google. Also, Tony Fadell, Nest founder and CEO has just become the new lead of the Google Glass team. Despite this, the Current Glass chief, Ivy Ross, will still be in charge of the day-to-day operations of the Glass team.
There is no doubt that this is a big change to the Google Glass program and that there will surely be even bigger changes in the near future. We look at this as a positive situation, maybe signifying the near consumer launch of Google Glass for an affordable price.
