It looks as though Facebook has ever so quietly pushed out a completely separate Facebook app that is called “Facebook Lite” to a few emerging markets such as South Africa and Vietnam. As you can probably discern from its name, Facebook Lite is a simplified version of the Facebook app that is specifically designed to run well on lower-end or outdated devices.
This new Facebook Lite is so tailored for emerging markets and low-end devices that the app size itself is a mere 252 KB. This small size makes downloading the app much easier when you don’t have access to fast networks or you just don’t have a lot of storage on your device.
At this point in time the Facebook Lite app is in testing in these emerging markets where it has been released. This testing will tell Facebook whether or not the app is worth pursuing and releasing to the public on a much larger scale, Facebook currently has no plans for a wider launch of the app.
It will be interesting to see if Facebook decides to continue with development of the Facebook Lite app and give it a much larger release. As of now though, all we can do it play the waiting game, but not all of us have to. If you happen to live in one of the emerging markets that the Facebook Lite app was released in, you can download it from the Google Play Store here. You might as well at least check right?
