On stage at MWC 2015, Sundar Pichai has dropped something of a bombshell, Google is becoming a wireless carrier. At least a small one. The rumors have been going around for months, but this is our first confirmation of it. “The idea is to show what’s possible”, said Pichai at the event.
Google isn’t trying to compete with AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, or T-Mobile with this new MVNO, but simply to explore how to integrate Wifi and cellular service in a better way. One reason for this is to eliminate dropped calls. The hope for the service is to lay a groundwork for something that Google hopes other carriers will later adopt.
The service will be announced sometime in the coming months (almost certainly at Google I/O) but the announcement could come at a separate event. What are your thoughts on this news? Let us know down in the comments!
