Microsoft has today announced the latest addition to their Surface lineup in the form of the Surface 3. This new 10.8″ inch tablet runs full Windows 8.1 and starts at $499 for the base model. Pre-orders start today with the tablet shipping/going on sale on May 5th in the US. 27 other markets will join that party by May 7th. All Microsoft stores will have the tablet for demo starting tomorrow, April 1st (and no it’s not a joke).

There are a handful of different variants in which you can buy the Surface 3 (all listed below) but all are powered by an Intel Atom x7 Quad-core processor running at 1.6GHz.

  • 2GB RAM/64GB Storage – $499
  • 2GB RAM/64GB Storage, LTE – $599
  • 4GB RAM/128GB Storage – $599
  • 4GB RAM/128GB Storage, LTE – $699

The tablet has a full size USB 3.0 port, a Mini DisplayPort, and a microSD slot. The tablet charges via microUSB with an included 13W fast charger. A standard microUSB charger will work just fine however. All variants will come with a free one-year subscription to Office 365 personal.

On the back of the tablet we have an 8MP camera with a 3.5MP camera on the front. The tablet is 8.7mm thick and weighs in at 1.37 pounds. Battery life is estimated at 10 hours.
