PS2 Classic Legend Of Kay Gets HD Remaster, Coming This Summer

The past few years have been ripe for HD remakes and remasters. Games like Resident Evil, Zone of the Enders, and Fable have seen new life and a new audience due to rereleases. Among these, there can be some unexpected ones, ones that make you raise your eyebrows. In line with that, this rerelease is one of the most curious to me, since I’ve never heard of the original before this.

MeditationLegend of Kay Anniversary is an HD remaster of the original Legend of Kay that came out on the PlayStation 2 in 2005. It is an action-adventure game in the vein of Sly Cooper and Jak and Daxter, complete with level-based exploration, combat, and platforming sections.

In Legend of Kay, you play as a cat named Kay who is a martial art aficionado. He takes on Gorilla Minister Shun and the Rat Alchemist Tak, who have taken over the realm of Yenching. The original is considered to be a cult classic due to its solid mechanics and great soundtrack.

This HD remaster is being handled by Nordic Games GmbH and KAIKO. This subsidiary of Nordic Games is based in Vienna/Austria, and the company is responsible for a few IPs purchased from the now defunct THQ, such as Darksiders. KAIKO is based in Germany and is headed up by industry veteran Peter Theirolf, who was the technical director at Keen Games for nearly 10 years.

Legend of Kay Anniversary isn’t just a port of the original title. It is thoroughly remastered and will include high-resolution textures, new character models with more detail, updated rendering techniques and crystal-clear sound.

Honestly, I don’t know what to think of this game. I had no knowledge of it before, but it must’ve done something right to warrant an HD remaster. It’ll be interesting to see if it’ll hold up, especially to someone who’s never played the original before.

Legend of Kay will be coming to the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC/Mac Summer 2015, retailing between 19.99 and 29.99 USD/EUR depending on the platform.
