Sometimes, especially with indie companies, it helps to focus on one skew for your game’s initial release. It helps the team to focus and not worry about dealing with multiple platforms and to get the game out in a timely manner. It’s nice to see these successes expand beyond their initial platforms, like with Shovel Knight and Bastion. However, this one in particular came as a surprise.
Previously released on Wii U and 3DS, WayForward announced via Twitter that Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse would be coming to Steam on Saturday, April 25th. However, that date was recently pushed up and the game is available now.
This version of Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is a port of the Wii U version that sports higher resolutions as well as high-resolution art. The gameplay retains its pixel-art style across all three platforms.
Shantae and Pirate’s Curse will also make use of Steam’s other features with Steam Trading Cards, Achievements, full controller support, and cloud saving.
As for the system requirements, they’re pretty much identical to Shantae: Risky’s Revenge. The only difference is that Windows XP is no longer supported, so older systems may have a problem.
Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is available now for $19.99. As one of my games of 2014, I can easily recommend it. If you want a full breakdown, you can check out my review of the 3DS version.
