It’s happened to us all before. We’ve gotten a bit tired behind the wheel and had our eyes shut for a moment only to open them a moment later in the horror of the car having moved from where it was. Driving tired has in fact been proven to be more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (not that either is acceptable). So what can we do to fix this? One clever company has created a new Android Wear app to help keep you awake behind the wheel.
SleepWake uses the heart rate sensor built into your watch (Apple Watch support is coming soon) to keep track of when you might be in danger of dozing off. The app periodically tracks your heart rate in the background and sends the info to dedicated servers for processing to check if you may be drowsy. The company claims that they have an accuracy rate of 90%.
Your heart rate is taken based on movement to keep track. As it realizes that you’ve gotten a bit sleepy, it will increase the number of readings to track it more often. If you happen to be moving and the watch realizes you might be dozing off, the watch will vibrate on a high setting and your phone will play an alarm. By only tracking at certain increments and scaling the frequency based on how tired you are and when you last slept.
SleepWake is currently only available on Android Wear devices and does require a heart rate sensor to work. The following Android Wear watches work with SleepWake.
- Moto 360
- LG G Watch R
- LG Watch Urbane
- ASUS ZenWatch
- Samsung Gear Live
It’s also worth nothing that this app is not designed to keep you awake. Rather it’s designed to alert you when you’re getting tired and to recommend you pull over an take a nap. It’s not guaranteed to keep you awake and you should not rely on it for that.
As mentioned earlier the company is working on bringing support to the Apple Watch which is coming soon. Currently you can download the app on Google Play for your compatible Android Wear device. The app is completely free and offers no in-app purchases.
