Windows 10 is finally here, but the official rollout is going to take place over the next few weeks. If you registered late, it’ll be a while til you get your free upgrade. However, if you don’t feel like waiting, you can actually skip the line entirely and get the update yourself, still for free. Here’s how.
- Go to www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
- Find your download configuration. Most users will want the 64-bit version, but if you are currently on a 32-bit version of Windows, you’ll need to download that.
- Run the tool.
- Choose “Upgrade This PC”
After that, it’s just a matter of patience. The tool will download the update, clean up the necessary files, and install it. There’s a few steps you’ll need to confirm, so be sure to stay nearby. Also make sure you have your PC plugged in if you’re using a laptop. The process will vary depending on your internet speed and hardware.
I performed this method on 3 machines last night including the Lenovo LaVie Z, Lenovo S21e, and the Nextbook Flexx 11. All three were successful, but the LaVie Z was the first to complete due to it’s SSD. One over desktop I tried did fail, but no harm was done in that case.
As always you do this at your own risk. You should be completely fine using this method, but it’s always possible something could go wrong. Be sure to make a backup before starting. Let us know in the comments below how this method fared for you!
