For the most part, we don’t get any official confirmation of a new smartphone before it’s official launch. Well, Blackberry is throwing those rules out the window. During their quarterly earnings call this morning, Blackberry confirmed that they will indeed launch the Priv. They didn’t reveal too many details, but they did confirm a few things. First of all, it will indeed be Android. They also confirmed the focus of the device will be on privacy, hence the name “Priv”. There’s no time frame yet on when this phone will launch, but it’s probably safe to assume that we’ll see it launch relatively soon. Several rumors have also pointed to a February launch, but let’s hope it comes a bit sooner than that.
Today, I am confirming our plans to launch Priv, an Android device named after BlackBerry’s heritage and core mission of protecting our customers’ privacy. Priv combines the best of BlackBerry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform.
