Clearing Up The Confusion Surrounding YouTube Red/Music And Google Play Music

In the past couple of weeks we’ve seen the launch of two new YouTube services, YouTube Red and YouTube Music. Both of these services fall under the same roof, along with Google Play Music, however it’s a bit confusing exactly how they relate/how they differ and what you get for a monthly fee and what you don’t. Let’s go ahead and try to ease up that confusion.

Google Play Music

Google Play Music is Google’s original music streaming service. With a massive selection of songs to choose from, it has been a go-to app for streaming music for many users. It’s cross platform with Android, iOS, and web support. There’s a free tier that works quite a lot like Pandora as well. To get access to all songs, offline music, and much more however, you’ll need to pony up $9.99 per month.

YouTube Red

The first of YouTube’s recently announced services was YouTube Red. This long overdue service is designed to do one thing, remove ads. Many who enjoy watching YouTube on a regular basis absolutely hate ads, so rather than using AdBlock which removes all the creator’s revenue, YouTube Red charges a flat fee to remove ads from the service while still paying creators. Paying monthly also enables users to download videos to their smartphones/tablets for offline use. This service also costs $9.99 per month, but more on that later.

The purpose of YouTube Red is to allow a method of removing ads from YouTube.

YouTube Music

Just this week Google launched YouTube Music. This application is designed for those who enjoy watching music videos and listening to music through YouTube. Think of it as a filtered version of YouTube focused just on music. This service is free, but paying a monthly fee will enable users to download music for offline use and use an audio only mode as well.

Do I Need To Pay For All Three Separately?

The beauty of these three services is that they are all under the same roof. If you pay Google just $9.99 a month, you get unlimited music streaming through Google Play Music, removal of video ads through YouTube Red, and ad-free offline listening through the YouTube Music app. In other words, all three services for one low price. Now, that might sound too good to be true or simply a promo, but the truth is that you’ll always be able to get this price for all three services in one. So should you get them? Short answer, definitely. If you’re planning to get a subscription music service or you just happen to watch a lot of videos, this service is a no-brainer.
