One of the engineers at Google, Benson Leung, is currently working hard to educate consumers about the benefits of USB C. He has taken it upon himself to test out some of the popular third party USB C cables out on the market. He’s already made his way through a good selection of accessories on Amazon, but now he’s set his sights on the official USB C cable from OnePlus.
The OnePlus 2 was one of the first devices to launch with USB C, but according to Leung the included cable is “out of spec”. What does that mean? Essentially using the cable could eventually result in damage to the user’s hub, charger, or even the port on the device itself. That applies on the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and the upcoming Pixel C. This cable should be fine if you’re usign a OnePlus 2 considering it’s lack of fast charging, but even there issues could arise.
Considering this is yet another cable found to be out of spec, you might want to consider simply sticking with Google’s official USB C cables for now as they aren’t much more expensive than third party cables.
