If you just picked up a new Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P, you’ve got yourself one awesome smartphone. However one important aspect of these two devices is that they both include the new USB C port for charging. This new port is great in the fact that it is capable of faster charging, better data transfer, and of course it’s reversible. However the one big downside right now is that USB C is a very new standard. It’s just hit the market and because of that accessories are hard to come by. What’s even harder to find is a good USB C cable and charger that meets spec.
If you’ve fallen out of the loop a bit, USB C cables have been called out left and right for not following USB C spec. Google Engineer Benson Leung has led the charge here and has identified many cables that fall out of spec. What happens when a USB C cable is found out of spec? Simply put it can cause damage to the cable, the charger, or even your device over time. Thus it’s important to get a cable and charger that can safely charge your phone. Luckily, Choetech has stepped up to bat.
With their new USB C to USB C charging cable, Choetech has created what is, at least to my knowledge, the first third party USB charger that follows USB C spec and also charges Nexus smartphones at the same speed as the ones found in the box with those devices.
Choetech sells their charger in two parts. First, the cable. The USB C cable itself is a 3.3ft (1M) cable which has a USB C port on both ends. The cable is easy to bend and twist to the desired position, but also doesn’t seem too easy to tangle nor too fragile. From what I can tell this is a very durable cable that I will happily use with my phone. At just over $6 (at the time of writing), this is also one heck of a deal.
The second part of this package is the USB C charger. This charging brick is capable of charging at 3A just like the charging brick that comes in the box with this year’s Nexus smartphones. A note to keep in mind, this brick does have a USB C port on it so it will only work with a USB C to USB C cable. At $16.99 it’s a bit more pricey, but it’s still far cheaper than anything Google officially offers.
Both the cable and the charging brick are available for purchase on Amazon. I’ve tested them both throughly with my Nexus 6P and also lightly with the Lumia 950 and both work just fine. I have no problem recommending them.
