Just yesterday a rumor hit the web claiming that Sony was killing off the Xperia Z series in exachange for the recently announced Xperia X line. Today however, that rumor has become reality as Sony has confirmed that the Z series is no more. The statement below was obtained by Xperia Blog:
“The Xperia Z line has reached its culmination – Xperia X series represents a new chapter and evolution of our product strategy. Whilst the Xperia Z series was all about bringing the best of Sony’s advanced technologies to smartphones, Xperia X series is based on bringing smart, adaptive Sony user experiences across camera, battery performance and hardware / software design.”
The new Xperia X lineup includes the Xperia X, Xperia XA, and the X Performance, Sony’s new flagship.
Sony’s Xperia Z line has consisted of 18 different smartphones and tablets over the past 3 years starting with the original Xperia Z back which was announced at CES 2013. Following that, the company released devices every 6 months (give or take), albeit minor upgrades at best from release to release. While none of those devices could be considered a runaway success, at least in my opinion, they did have their perks, namely water resistance. The devices were primarily sold unlocked internationally, never truly making a name for themselves in the United States excluding a couple releases on T-Mobile and Verizon.
