Huawei P9 And P9 Plus Go Official With Dual Leica Cameras And Powerful Specs

We’ve been seeing leaks of the Huawei P9 for the past several weeks and today the company has officially announced it along with its older brother, the P9 Plus. Here’s what you need to know.

Huawei P9

The Huawei P9 packs a 5.2″ 1080p IPS LCD display that Huawei says is the same size as Apple’s iPhone 6S. It’s powered by the Kirin 950 chipset that has been slightly modified from it’s previous appearance in the Mate 8. Two variants will be available, one with 32GB of storage and 3GB of RAM and another with 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. A microSD slot is also available for expansion.

The design of the P9 is similar to the Nexus 6P, also made by Huawei, and features a similar all-metal build. There is also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. For power there’s a 3,000 mAh battery and USB C for charging.

With the P9 however it’s all about the camera with not one, but two 12MP cameras provided by Leica. One sensor takes standard pictures and the other take monochromatic (black and white) images with varying levels of grey. These two sensors work together to create better low-light images and capture more detail as well. The f/2.2 sensor features a field of view equivalent to 27mm. Autofocus using a laser and, while there’s no OIS, there is a dual-LED flash to help take pictures in a dark space alongside the monochromatic sensor.

Huawei P9 Plus

On the other hand, the P9 Plus features a slightly larger 5.5″ display but this time using AMOLED technology. It also features “Press Touch” which is similar to Apple’s 3D Touch feature.
The P9 Plus is only available with 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM and also features a larger 3,400 mAh battery. It also features Dual-IC Rapid Charge which Huawei claims will offer 6 hours of talk time with a 10-minute charge.

It also features front facing stereo speakers which Huawei says work a bit differently. When the device is in portrait mode, the top speaker takes care of the treble with bass coming out of the bottom.

The Huawei P9 will be available starting this month€599 for 3GB/32GB version and €649 for the 4GB/64GB version. The P9 Plus comes in at €749 and will launch May 20th.
