Supergiant Games is probably one of my favorite developers in recent memory. Both of their previous games Bastion and Transistor were a blast, with Transistor being my number one game of 2014. Needless to say I like to keep an eye on their new projects, and it looks like a new one is incoming.
Announced as a post on their website, Supergiant revealed Pyre, a “party-based role-playing game” coming to both Steam and PS4. In Pyre you “lead a band of exiles through an ancient competition spread across a vast, mystical purgatory”.
The scale of the project appears to be somewhat larger than both Bastion and Transistor in terms of characters and world-building, with the latter being expected from Supergiant.
With the announcement is a trailer and some screenshots to help you get a feel for the style Pyre is going for. That said, the action-RPG/arena combat is a bit hard to read. Since it is a reveal trailer, I’ll let the game’s vagueness slide, but I hope to see some substance soon.
For those going to PAX East, your chance to take a look will be much sooner that you think, as Supergiant will have a playable demo at their booth.
Pyre will be coming to PC and PlayStation 4 in 2017. That’s as accurate as we can get for now, but considering the similar approach Transistor’s reveal had before PAX East 2013, we may see it in the spring.
