USB C has been off to a bit of a rocky start with the standard’s official spec drawing a line between what was a good buy and what wasn’t. Google engineer Benson Leung previously made it clear that he felt both the LG G5 and the HTC 10 did not meet USB C spec due to the inclusion of Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. HTC responded to that by stating that they had modified the quick charging standard to fall within USB C spec, but we hadn’t heard anything from LG regarding the G5.
Thanks to GTrusted however, we now know that the LG G5 is compliant with USB C spec after all.
Their series of tests on the LG G5 revealed a number of things about the phone’s port, most notably that it supports the standard Power Delivery along with Qualcomm’s fast charging. GTrusted further reported that in their testing the G5 could charge at 15W (5V at 3A) and 18W (9V at 2A). This was proved when they tested out Google’s Universal Type-C charger with the device and attained fast charging. More testing obviously needs to be done to confirm exactly what we’re dealing with, but as Leung mentioned, “this is an extremely pleasant surprise”.
