Productivity on Android hasn’t always been great, but thanks to a small company known as Jide, we’ve seen what the OS and its apps are capable of with some big changes. Remix OS first debuted a couple of years ago on the companies original Remix tablet and since then Jide has debuted two new versions of their OS along with a new desktop device. However today is their big reveal, a second generation tablet and the third iteration of their operating system.
First let’s talk about the OS. Like previous versions of Remix OS, Remix OS 3 is a completely new way to look at Android. Rather than using fullscreen apps with a handful of multi-tasking options, Remix OS adopts windows, just like most desktop operating systems. You can run just about any Android app within its own window making multi-tasking easier than ever. This latest version is even based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
Moving on to hardware however, Jide has put together a pretty impressive package. The Remix Pro sports a 12″ 2160x1440p IPS display with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor and 3GB of RAM under the hood. You’ll also get 32GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot for expanding that a bit further. 8MP and 5MP cameras are found on the front and back respectively and a massive 9,000 mAh battery powers the whole package. It even sports USB C with Quick Charging capabilities. There’s also a full size USB port on board.
An attachable keyboard will also be available with the tablet when it launches. Sadly however, we don’t have any details on that just yet. For now the device will be sold only in China, but a wider release is planned for a later date. Pricing has also not been confirmed just yet.
Along with that announcement, Jide has confirmed that one of the founders of the Android-x86 Open Source Project, Chih-Wei Huang, has joined the team at Jide. Huang has this to say about the move.
“Linux was created as a desktop OS, but it’s actually the only space that the operating system hasn’t truly dominated. I joined Jide because I think Remix OS is [the] best route to establish Linux as a key player in the desktop OS space.”
Lastly, Jide has announced that they have worked with Acer and AOC to bring two new devices to the market running Remix OS. The new Acer Aspire ES1-131, a convertible 11.6″ laptop powered by an Intel Celeron N3150 processor, 4GB of RAM, and of course with Remix OS 3 out of the box. The AOC Mars All-in-One PC will also come with Remix OS 3 and will be available in both 24″ and 32″ variants.
“2016 has been an incredibly exciting year for Jide Technology, highlighted by the launch of Remix OS for PC and the several quality partners that we have been fortunate to announce. When we first started out more than 2 years ago, no one quite got what we were trying to achieve. Now, companies and brands that we have always admired are reaching out to us. It’s a win-win situation as we continue to push the capabilities of Android PCs.”
