A few days ago LG made the V20 official. Taking a look at the specs of the device, everything seems normal compared to other high-end Android phones except one thing. The US MIL-STD-810G certification. This particular certification isn’t one that smartphones typically earn these days. Rather, most smartphones are earning the IP67 rating, which means the device is both dust and water-resistant. Even the newly announced iPhone 7 is touting an IP67 rating. But what does the MIL-STD-810G rating on the V20 mean? Let’s get into that.
First, let’s go over what exactly the MIL-STD-810G standard is. In a nutshell, it’s a set of certifications created by the US military which is used to apply “ruggedness” ratings to certain objects and products. This sounds great, but there is actually a substantial flaw in the certification system of the MIL-STD-810G standard…there are so many of them. There are certifications for pressure, temperature, radiation, gunfire, vibration, impact, and the list goes on. So, when the MIL-STD-810G certification is slapped onto a product, one is left to guess which specific certification(s) the product has. Luckily, in the case of the LG V20, LG has made it clear to consumers which certification the device has.
With the LG V20’s MIL-STD-810G rating, it entails drops. More specifically, the V20 survived 26 drops from a height of 4 feet. These drops were onto 2-inches of plywood on top of concrete, which may seem like an odd drop test surface, but this surface was used for a reason. This reason being that in the military, when transporting objects, this will most likely be the surface in which those objects fall onto.
This drop test may not seem like much, but that’s actually quite a bit of abuse for a smartphone to endure. In fact, many other Android sites have already gotten their hands on V20s and performed some pretty grueling drop tests of their own. These tests show just how durable the V20 is when it comes to drops. The device isn’t unbreakable, but it’s definitely more likely to survive a drop than most other high-end smartphones.
