AT&T is ahead of schedule in deploying it’s LTE-M so far in the second quarter of 2017. This network is meant to help connect your Internet of Things devices.
LTE-M is a new network technology meant to compete with low power short-range networks such as WiFi. LTE-M offers a combination of low power, enhanced coverage, and carrier grade security. With this new technology you can expect lower device costs, longer battery life (up to 10 years for certain devices), better coverage underground and deep inside of buildings, and modules as small as 1/6 the size of current modules.
AT&T is also looking to offer LTE-M in Mexico by the end of the year. Plans are to cover the same 400 million people their 4G network does in North America and Mexico by the end of 2017.
We’re seeing real momentum for LTE-M that will let us connect more end points than ever before. And we can do it at a lower cost with superior performance and carrier-grade security, said Chris Penrose, President, Internet of Things Solutions, AT&T.
With a successful test at AT&T Labs in San Ramon that started back in last October. AT&T is now moving forward and it’s exciting news for enterprise customers. AT&T is working on products with tech leaders such as the following:
- Capstone Metering with smart water meters
- RM2 with smart pallets
- PepsiCo with smart beverage fountains
- Samsung with consumer devices
- Xirgo Technologies with shipping container monitoring
- CalAmp with connected vehicles and fleet & asset management
AT&T has now also opened a second test LTE-M pilot location in the Columbus, Ohio market with RM2, Capstone, and other industry leaders. With plans to expand to more players in the field in March.
