Gboard on Android gets big update, improvements for most features

1 min read

Gboard for Android is getting a pretty nice update this week. There are improvements across most of the app — emoji and GIF suggestions while you type, better voice typing, even more background themes, and even Google Translate access. On a smaller note, emoji, web, and GIF search can be used in right-to-left languages.

Emoji and GIF Suggestions

While you’re pecking away at the keyboard, emoji and GIF suggestions will now show up in the keyboard suggestion area. GIFs will work in supported apps, such as Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, Hangouts and Allo.

Google Translation Integration

One of the cool features of this upgrade is Google Translate integration. You can tap the G button, then the Translate button to launch the translate function. Right from the keyboard, you can type in English and have your words show up in whatever language you want — right in the message or comment field, ready to send.

Themes and Voice Improvements

One of the nice features of Gboard is themes. In case you aren’t aware, you can head over to the language and input section of settings, locate the Gboard settings and choose different color schemes or background images. Well, Google is expanding that to include scenic themes as well. They’ll be continuing to expand the themes section, too.

As far as voice goes, there’s now an updated interface to make switching back to typing easier than ever.

If you want to grab this update for yourself, then go to the Play Store and make sure you’re running the latest version of the app.
