MGCOOL, the Chinese startup has recently announced a couple new action cameras, one of them being the Explorer ES. MGCOOL also made the Band 2, which we reviewed a few months ago. We determined that it offered quite a bit of value for a sub-$35 price point. Needless to say, MGCOOL is certainly worth keeping your eyes on for low-cost tech (although it comes straight from China).
Now, what about the new Explorer ES? Well, it boasts 2K recording at 15fps, and 1080p recording at 30fps. The sensor maker is unknown, and only listed on the MGCOOL website as “FULL HD.” There’s an Allwinner V3 Series CPU inside, powered by a 1050mAh battery that will last for 80 minutes of recording 1080p video. It also takes still photos, up to 16MP.
However, the body is plastic and needs to be inside a case in order to be protected against dust and water. But once in the case, it can be submerged up to 30 meters. There is a nice bonus, though: you don’t have to buy accessories for this camera, because they come with a few. Included with the Explorer ES is the waterproof case, a camera bracket (perhaps something to do with mounting), a bicycle mount, and helmet mount.
All that said — it doesn’t look like a bad camera for $50. But there is some great competition in that price bracket, and that is from MGCOOL’s other action cameras. They also have the Explorer and Explorer 1S, which are both 4K cameras. The Explorer 1S is has a superior processor when compared to the Explorer, but otherwise, they are the same. The amazing part? The Explorer comes in at $60, and the Explorer 1S at $80. It’s confusing as to why they’re all priced so close to each other, but in any case, they all look like decent options for budget action cameras.
We will be taking a look at one of the cameras shortly, so be on the lookout for our review. In the meantime, you can check out MGCOOL’s website (linked below) for more details about the cameras.
