We’ve known for quite some time that Razer would be releasing a phone, but no one knew what to expect. Razer, a company known for their gaming peripherals and gaming laptops, has never released a phone before. Fortunately, Nextbit — the company Razer acquired not too long ago — has experience in this area. As such, the design of the Razer Phone shares a lot with the Robin with its hard corners and boxy shape.
The Razer Phone boasts the first 120hz display to come to an Android phone in the US. This 5.72-inch QHD LCD screen will offer buttery smooth performance and graphics thanks to the 120hz UltraMotion display. This high refresh rate will keep gamers happy but also make everything else on the screen look smooth and fast for everyone else. Not all games will take advantage of the 120hz display at first, but Razer is working with them to add support.
What goes great with a fantastic display when gaming? That’s right, fantastic sound, and Razer has included dual front-facing stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. This makes your sound come to life and the speakers are directed at you, so all the action can be heard and won’t be muffled. Unfortunately, there is no headphone jack but Razer does include a THX Certified USB-C headphone dongle with a 24-bit DAC.
A gaming phone wouldn’t be complete without some powerful specs and like most other flagships this year the Razer Phone comes with a Snapdragon 835 SoC. Unlike many of the other phones, it also comes with a whopping 8GB of RAM. If there is one thing gamers know, you can never have enough RAM and that 8GB will definitely come in handy.
With all this power and the focus of this phone being gaming, Razer went all out offering a huge 4000mAh battery. It’ll be interesting to see how this lives up to all that gaming but the battery is quite a bit larger than the Samsung S8+, LG V30, and Pixel 2 XL — and that is definitely a good thing.
In the camera department, Razer has gone with the popular trend of offering dual cameras on the back. Both offer a 12MP resolution with the wide camera featuring an f/1.75 aperture and the zoom camera including an f/2.6 aperture. On the front is an 8MP f/2.0 camera for all your selfie needs.
The Razer Phone will come out the box with Android 7.1.1 Nougat with the promise of an Oreo update in Q1 of 2018. What makes their software quite interesting is the inclusion of Nova Launcher Prime with Google Assistant integration, one of the most popular launchers on Android and my personal favorite. This will give you tons of customizations and make the phone feel very snappy, two things gamers and users in general love.
Razer has also included a theme store allowing you to change not only the wallpaper but also the icons and colors throughout the phone. There are custom wallpapers from big gaming titles such as Shadowgun Legends, and custom ringtones from Razer DJs.
Once you have this powerhouse of a phone Razer knows you’re going to need some games to go with it. For that reason, they have partnered with Square Enix and Tencent to bring you several gaming titles optimized for all their phone has to offer. Some of their other partnerships include:
- “Final Fantasy® XV Pocket Edition” from Square Enix
- “Gear.Club” from Eden Games
- “Lineage 2: Revolution” from Netmarble Games Corporation
- “Old School RuneScape™” from Jagex Limited
- “RuneScape™” from Jagex Limited
- “Shadowgun Legends™” from Madfinger Games
- “Tekken™” from BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe
- “Titanfall™: Assault” from NEXON Co., Ltd. and Particle City, Inc.
- “World of Tanks Blitz” from Wargaming Group Limited
