AT&T Netgear LTE Mobile Hotspot Router review: All day internet that fits in your palm

4 min read

The Nighthawk LTE Mobile Hotspot Router is one of the latest mobile hotspots to come from Netgear and AT&T. Dedicated mobile hotspots really come in handy for frequent travelers and are also great for adding LTE connectivity to WiFi devices such as tablets. This is perfect for road trips or accessing high-speed internet in rural areas that might lack broadband.

The Netgear Nighthawk LTE Mobile Hotspot Router just barely fits in the palm of your hand, making it not quite compact but also not too large to be portable. The face of the hotspot includes a 1.4-inch circular screen that provides you with the most useful information. This includes how many days are left on your plan, your data cap and how much you’ve used of it, the names of your WiFi access points, number of devices connected, and your password. There are also two stylish and very useful meters on either side of the screen giving you a quick glance at how much of your data cap you’ve used and how much battery life is left.

On the bottom edge is a traditional USB port, a USB-C port, and an ethernet port. I really have to give Netgear credit for not using micro USB and choosing the new standard USB-C port for charging. This is something that should be more common but unfortunately is not. There is also a pair of rubber feet for standing the hotspot up vertically making it even easier to read the screen and taking up less table space.

There is a power button on the top edge of the hotspot which is also used to cycle through the information on the screen. This is important to note because the screen is not a touchscreen and there are several screens with information.

The bottom panel is removable and houses the removable battery and microSD card slot. While it is removable, it is not that easy to accomplish. Hopefully, this is something you won’t be doing often, that is unless you like to swap microSD cards regularly.

Features and Usability

The Netgear Nighthawk LTE Mobile Hotspot Router is a pretty full featured router that offers many options you’ll find on traditional routers. First off, you have access to 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands, which gives you the distance of 2.4Ghz or the blazing speed of 5Ghz. Then there are a number of settings and controls that it offers.

This includes, but isn’t limited to parental controls, website filtering, access controls, and scheduling. This is perfect if you’re a parent and want some control over what your kids are seeing on the internet on those long road trips or vacations. It even includes port forwarding and settings to filter ports.

Thanks to the USB port, microSD card slot, and DLNA support the Nighthawk LTE Mobile Hotspot Router is a sharing powerhouse. With support for up to 20 connections, everyone you give access to will be able to easily view the files you want to share. Now everyone can view all those photos and videos you have without using up any data.

If you’re traveling alone, more security conscious, want to save battery life, or just don’t want to share your connection, the Netgear Nighthawk LTE Mobile Hotspot router has you covered here as well. If you use an Ethernet or USB connection you can have a physical tether to your hotspot.

Mobile hotspots are generally within a close vicinity to you and your devices, but even so, it is always beneficial to have extra range. While using the Netgear LTE Mobile Hotspot I set it to support long distances in the settings. After doing this I was able to keep a solid connection at up to 60ft. or more, which should be plenty for most users. This will cover a hotel room, apartments, and some homes without issue.

Battery Life

Netgear claims this hotspot will last you all day with 24 hours of battery life. In my own experience, I had one occurrence where it died within about 10 hours. However, I’m happy to report that was a fluke and subsequent days I was able to reach 17 hours of usage lasting me a full day with juice to spare. Previously mobile hotspots I had used would die much earlier so this was a big advantage with the Netgear LTE Mobile Hotspot.

Final Thoughts

The Netgear Nighthawk LTE Mobile Hotspot Router is a pretty formidable device. Whether you’re looking for something to take on road trips with the family, wanting a secure fast connection on your business travels, or living in a rural area wanting faster internet, a mobile hotspot can make a big difference with how you experience the internet.
