What do you know? It’s already time for a new and improved iPhone, announced by Apple today from the Steve Jobs Theater. Let’s take a look at some of the features of the new iPhones.
First, there’s the iPhone XS which comes in two models, the first with a 5.8′ inch Super Retina OLED display and the second, the iPhone XS Max with a 6.8′ Super Retina OLED display. Both have an impressive 458 pixels per inch. The display has a 60% greater dynamic range than previous iPhones. The iPhone Xs and Xs Max have 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB capabilities each with their respective price. The iPhone XS starts at $999 and the XS Max starts at $1099, with prices increasing for higher storage capacities.
Next, the design. The iPhones are made with a surgical grade stainless steel that comes in three colors: gold, silver and space grey. Both also are IP68 water and dust resistant.
Following the design, let’s move into a question many consumers, and even some professionals ask about, the camera specs. Apple did not disappoint in this area! For the rear camera, the iPhone XS has 12MP wide-angle camera as well as a 12MP telephoto camera. The 12MP wide-angle camera, with the new sensor, has an f.18 aperture, and the 12MP telephoto camera has an f.24 aperture. The camera’s True Tone flash has also been improved with an advanced flicker-detect system. For the front facing camera, you’ll find a 7-megapixel camera with f2.2 aperture.
One of the new features of the impressive rear-facing camera is Apple’s “smart HDR” which captures more frames of shadow and highlights and then combines them into one using the Neural Engine, which then picks the best ones. Another feature of the camera is an improved “bokeh” effect. The “bokeh” effect is when focus and blur are used to create a better fade from the foreground to the background. Finally, probably one of the most amazing features of the camera, is that the depth of field of a photo can be modified after taking the photo. That’s right, after taking the photo!
Some of the internal specs of the iPhone XS include the 12 Bionic Chip complete with a 6-core chip, two of which are high-performance cores that make the A12 15% faster and 40% less power draining than its predecessor, the A11. On top of the 6-cores there are two other cores: the 4-core GPU that provides 50 percent faster tessellation and multilayer rendering and the new neural engine 8-core dedicated to machine learning.
Another one of the features that came out, newly unique to iPhone, is the option for dual-SIM, one through a physical SIM-card slot and another through eSIM (electronic SIM), except in China, where it will be both physical slots.
If you’re wanting to get your hands on one of the new phones, Pre-orders start on the 14th of September, and the products will be shipped on the 21st of September as well as in stores.
